Cycling Orthotics

One of the great things about cycling is the lack of impact on your feet, but on the downside there is a lot of repetitious movement through many of your joints. Large amounts of power is created by your glutes and quadriceps muscles which is then transferred to the pedals though your feet. Add up the number of pedal strokes over a ride and you can see why overuse injuries can occur, as well as hot spots in your cycling shoes.

Having your feet supported by an orthotic within a properly fitted cycling shoe can reduce the excess motion and pressure points that have caused overuse injuries and shoe hot spots, and at the same time improve the efficiency of your body putting power though to your bike.

If you are experiencing pain in your lower back, hip, or knee and have had your bike-fit assessed, it may be worth investigating cycling orthoses as a solution for you. Your podiatrist will also be able to assess your body structure and relate it to your footwear choice and cleat positioning.

Common reasons that a rider may need an assessment include:

  • Knee pain
  • Arch pain
  • Burning feet
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Iliotibial band pain
  • Back pain
  • Asymmetry of power between legs
  • Orthotic use in day to day life or for other sports

Cycling orthoses are quite different in construction and profile compared to standard orthoses. At Blue Mountains Podiatry we use the best cycling orthotics in Australia. Customised Cobra9 cycling orthoses are specifically designed to fit cycling shoes and are lightweight, made of a carbon fiber inner core.
